Obituary for Ruth Mae Ewen (Brooks)

Ruth Mae Ewen (Canada’s Cutest Baby), age 79 of Derby, died peacefully, early Monday morning, September 26, 2016 after a brief illness. Born in Florenceville, New Brunswick, Canada on March 3, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Alfred V. and Bernice Tompkins Brooks. Ruth grew up on the family farm where she learned to enjoy horseback riding, skating and fishing on the St. John River and cross-country skiing back and forth to school. In 1951 her family packed their belongings, and moved with a caravan of several other families, to Seymour where Ruth attended Seymour High School and graduated in 1955. Ruth worked for many years in retail sales until she retired in 2014. Country music and bingo both made her come alive. She missed Canada and went back to visit her homestead as often as she could. Ruth loved God with all her heart and was a faithful member of Seymour Evangelical Baptist Church, where she volunteered to teach vacation bible school for many years. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brother Borden Brooks of Seymour and her former husband Walter J. Ewen, Jr. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grand-mother and will be sadly missed by her loving children; Scott Ewen and his wife Deborah of Atoka, TN and Mark Ewen and his wife Joy of Derby, her Sister-in-law Joan Brooks and brother-in-law Robert Ewen both of Seymour, and her Uncle Everett Tompkins and wife Elizabeth of New Brunswick. Ruth has also made many great memories with each of her grandchildren; Ashley and Paul Netishen of Tewksbury, MA, Sarah Ewen of New Haven, Jessica Ewen of Pensacola, FL, Maggie Ewen of Naugatuck and Trisha and Leo Tetreault of Otis, MA. She adored her great-grandchildren, Victoria Ewen, Dylan Gallagher and Emily Netishen. Ruth is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews in the Brooks and Tompkins families. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 2nd, 2016 from 1 to 4 pm at the Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church St, Seymour. A funeral service will be held Monday, October 3rd, 2016 at 10:00 am DIRECTLY at the Seymour Evangelical Baptist Church, 104 Mountain Rd. Seymour, with the Reverend David Abbott officiating. Interment will be immediately following at Great Hill Cemetery, Seymour.
